Use the three-distance method
For most repair requests, take at least three views. Start with a wide photo that shows the room, wall, exterior elevation, or opening so the repair location has context. Then take a medium photo that shows the entire door, window, cabinet, floor section, gutter run, or fixture. Finish with close-ups of the damaged area.
This prevents a common estimating problem: receiving five excellent close-ups with no idea whether the crack is beside a tub, ten feet up an exterior wall, under a cabinet, or in the middle of a stair landing. Access and surrounding finishes can change the repair method as much as the defect itself.
Show scale instead of making the viewer guess
Include a tape measure, ruler, known-size object, or written dimensions when size matters. Photograph the measurement clearly enough that the numbers can be read. For doors and shelving, overall width and height can be useful. For patches, flooring, trim, and rot, approximate length and width help establish material quantities.
You do not need architectural drawings for a small repair. A few accurate dimensions are much better than “about this big,” especially when a photo lens makes a 2-inch gap and a 12-inch gap look surprisingly similar.
Photograph the connection points
Repairs often fail at edges and attachments. For a loose railing, show the posts and where they connect. For a door problem, show hinges, strike plate, threshold, and the gaps around the slab. For a gutter, show hangers, joints, downspout connections, and the fascia behind the problem. For shelving or wall-mounted items, show the wall area and any known studs or existing anchors.
These photos help distinguish a replaceable part from a damaged mounting surface. A loose hinge on a solid jamb is not the same job as a hinge attached to split or rotten wood.
Show water damage in relation to the possible source
If moisture is involved, photograph both the damage and what is above, beside, or outside it. A soft floor next to a toilet should include the toilet and surrounding floor. Stained trim below a window should include the whole window and exterior when possible. A ceiling stain should include the room above or roof area if you know what is there.
Also say whether the area is currently wet, whether the symptom appears only after rain, and whether the source has already been repaired. Old staining after a corrected leak is a very different scope from material that is actively getting wetter.
Include product information for installations and assembly
For a product you already purchased, send a photo of the box label, model number, manufacturer, and installation location. A “garage shelf” could be a light freestanding rack or a ceiling-mounted storage system that requires structural attachment. A “basketball hoop” could be portable, wall-mounted, or an in-ground system with concrete work.
Model information lets the contractor review basic installation requirements and identify obvious scope conflicts before scheduling. It also helps determine whether missing parts, anchors, or site preparation may be needed.
Photos improve scoping, but they are not X-rays
No photo can prove what is inside a wall, below flooring, behind rotten trim, or under a shower base. Images are excellent for deciding whether the project fits, identifying likely materials, and preparing questions. They are less reliable for guaranteeing the condition of concealed framing or moisture damage.
Treat a photo-based estimate as a scope based on visible information. If opening the repair reveals a materially different condition, the responsible next step is to document it and update the scope before additional work proceeds.
